LUÍSE

A DRAMA BY
CELIA DE FRÉINE
Léireofar Luíse, dráma nua i nGaeilge, bunaithe ar shaol Luíse Ghabhánach Ní Dhufaigh, i Scoil Bhríde, Raghnallach
ón Déardaoin 5 Meán Fómhair go dtí an Satharn 10 Deireadh Fómhair ag 8pm. Sa dráma seo cuirtear aithne ar an mbean iomráiteach seo a bhunaigh Scoil Bhríde in 1917, an chéad Ghaelscoil sa tír ó laethanta na scoileanna cois claí i leith. Rugadh Luíse sa bhFrainc in 1884 agus chuir sí fúithi in Éirinn nuair a bhí sí fiche trí bliana d’aois. Chaith sí seal ag obair i Scoil Íde, an scoil do chailíní a bhunaigh an Piarsach, agus chaith sí Seachtain na Cásca i gcistineach Ard-Oifig an Phoist. Cuirfidh an léiriú seo tús le comóradh an chéid sa scoil.

Written by leading poet and playwright Celia de Fréine, and directed by Gerald Dalton, Luíse features Hilary Bowen-Walsh in the role of Luíse Ghabhánach Ní Dhufaigh, who founded Scoil Bhríde in 1917, the first Gaelscoil in Ireland. The play features music by Tríona Ní Dhomhnaill; images by Lelia Ní Chinnéide; lighting by Mike Donohue; and the voices of Jack Harte, Brendan Phelan and Mike Timms.

Of the play, critic Catherine Dunne said: ‘With tight direction and clever use of props, Hilary Bowen-Walsh brings Celia de Fréine’s beautifully-written script to life. Lúise is a compelling piece of theatre, illuminating the tenacity and vision of the formidable Louise Gavan Duffy … The play moves seamlessly between three languages – Irish, English and French – and the vivid, luminous performance by Bowen-Walsh ensures that the narrative is immediately accessible to non-native and native speakers alike. A captivating piece.’
